The Mechanical by Ian Tregillis7/6/2023 ![]() ![]() ![]() In The Mechanical, we see the Dutch as the super-power in the world powered by their invention of the Forge by Christiaan Huygens in the 17th century. ![]() Thanks to Ian Tregillis descriptive but easy flowing narrative, we achieve that goal and set the reader up for a great story regarding war, religion, philosophy, and the question of free will. I’m constantly on the look out for books that can build a bridge for fantasy readers wanting to dabble in a sci-fi world. The mechanical is a very gripping, creative, and fast-paced story that everybody can enjoy. Those stories put Ian Tregillis on my radar and when I found out that he had written a new science fiction/alternative history novel involving machines, my excitement was through the roof. His first series title the Milkweed Triptych takes us back to an alternative version of World War II and what would have happened if magic existed during the war. Ian Tregillis is an American author known for his alternative history novels. ![]()

![]() ![]() Look for the Broncos to peel off a few million of the cap space created by Talib’s trade on a veteran cornerback. 2017 third-rounder Brendan Langley proved as a rookie that he still has a long ways to go in his development as a cornerback, but he’s only been playing the position for a couple of years. ![]() However, behind Roby and Chris Harris Jr, the Broncos face uncertainty. The Broncos exercised Roby’s fifth-year option, which will cost the team a hefty sum in 2018, but if they’re going to offer their 2014 first-rounder a long-term extension, they have to see him as a starter game-in and game-out. The fifth-year Bradley Roby stands to benefit the most, and that was part of Denver’s motivation to trade Talib. Talib was set to count for $12 million against Denver’s cap, and although the team will certainly find ways to utilize the space created by this trade, Talib’s absence will create a void. Perhaps the Broncos should have asked for Kayvon Webster as part of the terms, because where once there were three upper-echelon cornerbacks, there are now two. Aqib Talib will be reunited with defensive coordinator Wade Phillips, the brainchild behind the vaunted 2015 World Champion Broncos defense. Per Ian Rapoport, the Broncos will get a 2018 fifth round pick in exchange for the five-time Pro Bowler. After weeks of talks with different teams across the NFL, the Denver Broncos have reportedly finalized a deal to trade Pro Bowl cornerback Aqib Talib to the Los Angeles Chargers. ![]()

New jonathan franzen book7/5/2023 ![]() ![]() Franzen chronicled his own involvement in a nearly identical outfit in his essay collection The Discomfort Zone. I witnessed a similar group explode out of a Congregational church in Connecticut during the late 1990s. Groups like Crossroads may be relics at this point, but they are not an invention. Crossroads paints a picture of a bygone era, one when cigarettes outnumbered guitars in the church parking lot by a factor of ten. The language of the group (a ministry of the fictional First Reformed Church in New Prospect, Illinois) is more psychological than spiritual, its character more in line with the confrontational self-help ethos of the support groups that were gaining traction at the time than the “Big E” evangelicalism that was emerging alongside. Instead, the group bears a distinctly mainline Protestant character, albeit in its early-1970s incarnation, the period in which the novel is set. There are no Bible studies, no prayer circles, no games of capture the flag, no tracts. Which is not meant as faint praise so much as an acknowledgement of the peculiarity of a work like this coming into existence in the first place, much less in 2021.Ĭrossroads is not the sort of youth group that most contemporary readers will associate with the term, however. Crossroads, the name of both the book and the group, may even be the finest work of fiction ever written on the subject. The panoramic new novel from Jonathan Franzen is about, among many other things, a church youth group. ![]()
